You can see the progression of this piece as I started getting more and more creative each time I made it. By my 6th time I had a little boy in my class that was ALL. ABOUT. DINOSAURS. so we added some dinosaurs. I also started watercolor painting the larger areas like the water and the sky because I was tired of coloring with colored pencils. I like when we can insert our creative liberties into basic artwork. It gives kids a sense of freedom to create and ownership in what they create.⁠

When storytime goes awry.... These two, who almost never get along (mostly because they are so much alike), had a giggling fit the other night in the middle of storytime. You can look in his eyes and see how much he looks up to his big sister. 🤩 Honestly, the interruption was worth this moment. Now... back to our regularly scheduled reading....⁠

I've been asked about reading to my kids. I have always read to my kids. All 4 of them. I have logged hours and hours of storytime. I can't say that it's made them great readers, but it has made them great lovers of stories, and the quality time with them, while not as picture-perfect as I'd like it to be, lasts a lifetime. ⁠

Currently we are reading the first of the Lord of the Rings series and The War That Saved My Life. I read one for 30 minutes to an hour and we listen to an Audio book for the other for 30 minutes or so.⁠

My friend, @nancy.reynolds.1612 gave me a hard time about my homemade yogurt not being truly homemade because I didn't actually grow the yogurt cultures. First of all, let me tell you that homemade yogurt using store-bought cultures is soooooo much yummier than store-bought yogurt. Also, I looked up how to make my own yogurt cultures and it's not that difficult. Coming soon, to a social media near you is Paterson Academy *truly* homemade yogurt.⁠

We looked at the African art exhibit this trip and I was inspired to put together a unit study on Africa. It's been on my list of things to do for a while now. We've done unit studies throughout our homeschool journey, but they've always been very small. I can't remember where I saw the painting this lesson was inspired by, but it must have been really awesome because every time I see this I can picture it in my head with perfect clarity. None of my final pieces did the original justice, but I really love the lesson that imperfect grids can make unique and interesting creations while still giving a small amount of structure to your work. I also enjoyed explaining to the kids that different values of the same color can add depth. Finally, I love how simple this lesson is so that the kids ages 3-6 and the ones 7-12 all ended up with dynamic finished pieces.⁠

One of my favorite things to do in art class is experiment. I guess it's the scientist in me, but experimenting with art techniques and materials and getting unexpected results is very exciting. Sometimes my experiments work out like this shaved chalk, water, and oil pastel piece. 🤩 Sometimes they don't work out at all. 🙄 I get why artists like Helen Frankenthaler and Max Ernst were so cutting edge. I am really excited to be studying some new-to-me artists for the Art in the Park series in the fall and I've coordinated the artists/art techniques from Art in the Park with the foundational art principles we will be doing in Art Class Foundations.⁠

Sometimes I get crazy and make breakfast for the family. Since I'm not teaching dinner classes all summer I may have to step up my game and make breakfast on the regular. Waffles and protein smoothies are a healthy way to get everyone some nutrition in before we jump into our busy summer days.⁠

First swim of the season. 🏊 The water was too cold for me, but these two loved every minute of it. I grew up going to Oak Ridge public pool which was fed from a natural spring. On the hottest day of the summer, that pool was like ice. 🥶 Now that I'm an adult, I get to say no to cold pools and just sit on the side and watch the kids freeze. Lol.⁠

I've been Marie Kondoing my house and one of the spaces I cleaned out first (as recommended) was my closet. Once the clothes were well gone through I went ahead and did the rest of the closet and pulled out 2 large bags of clothes and a large bag of garbage. One of the things I've been storing in my closet are all of the display boards from all of the fairs we have participated in. I decided it was time to let them go, but first.... an impromptu Paterson Academy fair took place in the living room. Walking through the maze of display boards and all of the memories.... Sophia dressed up as Marie Antoinette for the Living Museum with a ball of yarn in her hair to keep it high. Ethan's first Geography Fair where he did Antarctica with an Octonauts theme. Emma in the History Fair where we studied the mythical history of unicorns. So many projects done so far in our 8 years of homeschooling. Many more to come....⁠

My girls have all loved art, but this guy frequent

My girls have all loved art, but this guy frequently balks at art projects. He has a much more mechanical mind and his creativity is better explored with Legos and computers. But every now and then I get him to express himself through an art medium like painting. His work always surprises me as it is uniquely his own. I love watching him work. Plus, his fine-motor skills, which have always been slower than the girls, are catching up fast. He can hold a pencil or paintbrush with delicate ease and I can tell his concentration in what he's doing is vastly improved from even 6 months ago.⁠

Also, these Royal Portraits 👑 turned out really cute! We had a whole family of royals since each kid did one and I did one for the husband and myself. I'm tempted to frame them and hang them as our family portraits.⁠

Recently we've started doing some nature journaling. I put together an art pack that I carry with us and when we feel inspired by the natural world, we take time to sketch, draw, paint, and create. We're not really serious about it for now, but are enjoying the creative time as well as the time outdoors.⁠

Alien invasions were happening and Emma wanted in on the extra-terrestrial action. I love how these UFO's turned out and although I didn't get to sit down with her and talk her through the project, she did an amazing job on her piece too. What made this even more fun is I taught my dinner class, Dinner and a Movie - E.T. that night and we had pizza pasta for dinner with Reece's Pieces cookies (regular chocolate chip for the peanut-allergy child). The kids loved the E.T. movie and a piece of my childhood was shared with my little people. You can make E.T. inspired dinner with me or join me in the fall for fun art projects like this one.⁠

You can see the progression of this piece as I started getting more and more creative each time I made it. By my 6th time I had a little boy in my class that was ALL. ABOUT. DINOSAURS. so we added some dinosaurs. I also started watercolor painting the larger areas like the water and the sky because I was tired of coloring with colored pencils. I like when we can insert our creative liberties into basic artwork. It gives kids a sense of freedom to create and ownership in what they create.⁠

When storytime goes awry.... These two, who almost never get along (mostly because they are so much alike), had a giggling fit the other night in the middle of storytime. You can look in his eyes and see how much he looks up to his big sister. 🤩 Honestly, the interruption was worth this moment. Now... back to our regularly scheduled reading....⁠

I've been asked about reading to my kids. I have always read to my kids. All 4 of them. I have logged hours and hours of storytime. I can't say that it's made them great readers, but it has made them great lovers of stories, and the quality time with them, while not as picture-perfect as I'd like it to be, lasts a lifetime. ⁠

Currently we are reading the first of the Lord of the Rings series and The War That Saved My Life. I read one for 30 minutes to an hour and we listen to an Audio book for the other for 30 minutes or so.⁠

First of all, let me tell you that homemade yogurt using store-bought cultures is soooooo much yummier than store-bought yogurt. I can't remember where I saw the painting this lesson was inspired by, but it must have been really awesome because every time I see this I can picture it in my head with perfect clarity. None of my final pieces did the original justice, but I really love the lesson that imperfect grids can make unique and interesting creations while still giving a small amount of structure to your work. I also enjoyed explaining to the kids that different values of the same color can add depth. Finally, I love how simple this lesson is so that the kids ages 3-6 and the ones 7-12 all ended up with dynamic finished pieces.⁠

One of my favorite things to do in art class is experiment. I guess it's the scientist in me, but experimenting with art techniques and materials and getting unexpected results is very exciting. Sometimes my experiments work out like this shaved chalk, water, and oil pastel piece. 🤩 Sometimes they don't work out at all. 🙄 I get why artists like Helen Frankenthaler and Max Ernst were so cutting edge. I am really excited to be studying some new-to-me artists for the Art in the Park series in the fall and I've coordinated the artists/art techniques from Art in the Park with the foundational art principles we will be doing in Art Class Foundations.⁠

First swim of the season. 🏊 The water was too cold for me, but these two loved every minute of it. I grew up going to Oak Ridge public pool which was fed from a natural spring. On the hottest day of the summer, that pool was like ice. 🥶 Now that I'm an adult, I get to say no to cold pools and just sit on the side and watch the kids freeze. Lol.⁠

I've been Marie Kondoing my house and one of the spaces I cleaned out first (as recommended) was my closet. Once the clothes were well gone through I went ahead and did the rest of the closet and pulled out 2 large bags of clothes and a large bag of garbage. One of the things I've been storing in my closet are all of the display boards from all of the fairs we have participated in. I decided it was time to let them go, but first.... an impromptu Paterson Academy fair took place in the living room. Walking through the maze of display boards and all of the memories.... Sophia dressed up as Marie Antoinette for the Living Museum with a ball of yarn in her hair to keep it high. Ethan's first Geography Fair where he did Antarctica with an Octonauts theme. Emma in the History Fair where we studied the mythical history of unicorns. So many projects done so far in our 8 years of homeschooling. Many more to come....⁠

My girls have all loved art, but this guy frequent

My girls have all loved art, but this guy frequently balks at art projects. He has a much more mechanical mind and his creativity is better explored with Legos and computers. But every now and then I get him to express himself through an art medium like painting. His work always surprises me as it is uniquely his own. I love watching him work. Plus, his fine-motor skills, which have always been slower than the girls, are catching up fast. He can hold a pencil or paintbrush with delicate ease and I can tell his concentration in what he's doing is vastly improved from even 6 months ago.⁠

Also, these Royal Portraits 👑 turned out really cute! We had a whole family of royals since each kid did one and I did one for the husband and myself. I'm tempted to frame them and hang them as our family portraits.⁠

Recently we've started doing some nature journaling. I put together an art pack that I carry with us and when we feel inspired by the natural world, we take time to sketch, draw, paint, and create. We're not really serious about it for now, but are enjoying the creative time as well as the time outdoors.⁠

Meanwhile, this kid has been doing cosplay Wednesdays. Today's cosplay is Kazuichi Soda (左右田和一). Her current life goal is to randomly run into someone else dressed up as a character from the same show. It could happen....⁠

Alien invasions were happening and Emma wanted in on the extra-terrestrial action. I love how these UFO's turned out and although I didn't get to sit down with her and talk her through the project, she did an amazing job on her piece too. What made this even more fun is I taught my dinner class, Dinner and a Movie - E.T. that night and we had pizza pasta for dinner with Reece's Pieces cookies (regular chocolate chip for the peanut-allergy child). The kids loved the E.T. movie and a piece of my childhood was shared with my little people. You can make E.T. inspired dinner with me or join me in the fall for fun art projects like this one.⁠
