Art Appreciation – The “isms” of Art
Based on the book, “Name That Style” by Bob Raczka, this class is an exploration in art appreciation with exposure to several different art movements throughout history.
This is a lecture/discussion based class. We will discuss 14 different art movements, what characteristics qualify artwork within each movement, and the artists whose work defined the movement. We will look at one example of artwork in each movement to help reinforce the concepts learned.
Art movements we will discuss:
- Naturalism
- Mannerism
- Neoclassicism
- Romanticism
- Realism
- Impressionism
- Expressionism
- Pointillism
- Fauvism
- Cubism
- Futurism
- Surrealism
- Abstract Expressionism
- Photorealism
This is a fast-paced class that quickly covers a lot of information. We will not have time to go into great depth, but students will have a better understanding of the many different art movements and how these movements are defined. Hopefully, students walk away from the class interested in further study.
